HERITAGE QUEST ONLINE
HeritageQuest Online includes genealogical and historical material going back to the late 1700's. Sources include the United States federal censuses from 1790-1930 and more than 20,000 books, including 8,000 family histories and over 12,000 local histories. Additionally, there are more than 250 primary source documents, such as tax lists, city directories, probate records, and more.

INSPIRE offers magazines, books, encyclopedias, and other resources. Research current events, science, business, health, people, hobbies, and much more from your library, school, home, or office.
BORROWING POLICIES
HOW TO GET A LIBRARY CARD.
- Residents of Center or Winfield Townships are eligible for library cards at no charge.
- Adults need to provide proof of address.
- Children younger than 7th grade must have a parent/guardian provide identification and sign the application.
- Non-residents from other area libraries must have a valid library card from their home library.
BORROWING PERIODS FOR LIBRARY MATERIALS
- Books: any number of books for 2 weeks, with exception of Book Express (2 items, 1 week).
- Magazines: up to 5 magazines for 1 week.
- Compact discs (music): up to 6 titles for 2 weeks.
- Talking books on tape or cd: up to 6 titles for 2 weeks.
- Feature videos and dvds: up to 4 videos or dvds (or a combination of 2) for 1 week. NOTE: BORROWER MUST BE 17 OR OLDER TO BORROW R-RATED VIDEOS.
- Non-fiction videos and dvds: any number of titles for 2 weeks
- Pamphlets: up to 10 pamphlets for 1 week.
RENEWAL OF MATERIALS
- Materials may be renewed in the library or by telephone or by computer on our online library catalog.
- Renewal limits
- Books, compact disks, talking books on tape or cd, and non-fiction videos or dvds : may be renewed 3 times, except for reserve collection books and interlibrary loans.
- Feature videos or dvds, magazines, pamphlets, interlibrary loan items, reserve collection, and Book Express may not be renewed.
Book Drop: a book drop is available at the Crown Point Community Library (but not Winfield Library) for return of materials when the library is not open. Book drops will be locked when the library is open.
RESERVING OR HOLDING MATERIALS
- Materials may be placed on hold in the library, by telephone, or by computer on our online library catalog.
- Feature film videos and dvd's, Book Express titles, magazines, and pamphlets may not be placed on hold.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN
- Interlibrary loan service, to obtain books or magazine articles that the library does not have, is available to Center and Winfield Township residents with a Crown Point Community/Winfield Library card.
- Borrowers are limited to 5 interlibrary loan requests per month.
FINES AND FEES
- Overdue Materials
- The overdue fine for books, magazines, pamphlets, compact discs and talking books is $.10 per item per day (excluding Sundays and holidays), The maximum fine for books, talking books, and nonfiction videos and dvds is $4.00 per item. The maximum fine for magazines and pamphlets is $2.00.
- The overdue fine for feature videos and dvds is $1.00 per title per day (excluding Sundays and holidays), with a maximum of $10.00 per item.
- The overdue fine for Book Express books is $.25 per day.
- Borrowers may not check out additional materials if their fines total $2.00 or more.
- Fees for Lost or Damaged Materials
- Replacement cost plus a processing fee of $2.00 is charged for books, audiocassettes, talking books, and compact discs.
- Replacement cost plus a processing fee of $1.00 is charged for magazines and pamphlets.
- Replacement cost plus a processing fee of $3.00 is charged for videos.
- Fees for Replacement of Library Card
- Lost or stolen cards must be reported. There is a $2.00 replacement fee.
- There is a $2.00 replacement fee for damaged library cards, when damage is obviously the result of neglect or deliberate mutilation.
- Printing fees from the public computers.
- The first 5 pages printed are free. The fee is $.10 per page after that.

CROWN POINT COMMUNITY LIBRARY ACCEPTABLE USE AND INTERNET SAFETY POLICY
The Crown Point Community Library is pleased to be able to provide Internet access for its patrons.The library has no control over the information on the Internet and cannot be responsible for the accuracy, nature, or quality of information that is available. The Library is not responsible or liable for any direct, indirect, or consequential damages to personal data or equipment resulting from the use of its technology equipment, electronic resources, or connections to Internet resources. Users access the Internet at their own discretion.
To comply with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) the library has a Technology Protection Measure in place to protect minors from access to visual depictions of child pornography, obscenity, and material harmful to minors. However, the library cannot protect users from all offensive information. Parents of minors should be aware of the existence of material that could be inappropriate for children. The public library does not serve in loco parentis (in place of a parent), and librarians cannot provide constant care and supervision of children as they explore the Internet. Parents should instruct their children not to give out personal information (name, address, password, telephone number, credit card number) online, and they should discuss the dangers of electronic mail, instant messaging, and chat rooms. Parents must monitor and assume responsibility for their children's use of the Internet. A staff member will disable the Technology Protection Measure upon request by adults 17 and older for a lawful use that complies with this Acceptable Use and Internet Safety Policy. Restricted websites may be unblocked for any user after staff review.
Staff will assist patrons with Internet use as time permits but cannot offer personal instruction. Individualized classes are given by the Reference staff at scheduled appointment times.
The demand for use of the library's Internet workstations may exceed the available supply. Time limits will be imposed as needed.

- The Crown Point Community Library has the right to set and enforce rules and regulations concerning the use of Internet access provided by the library.
- Users must abide by all county, state, and federal laws when using the Internet.
- Users must respect all copyright laws when using the Internet.
- The Internet may not be used to access or transmit obscene, abusive or sexually explicit material or language that appeals to the prurient interest.
- The Internet is not to be used for solicitation, advertisement, or any other commercial purposes.
- The Internet may not be used to destroy, damage, or modify equipment, software, or data. Activities such as "hacking" and tampering are not allowed.
- Harassment, slandering of other users and dissemination of personal information regarding minors is prohibited.
- Users may not store files on the library's hard drives. The Library allows the use of USB storage devices in its public computers to save or retrieve information (USB devices should not require any device drivers or special software to be installed). Connecting other types of devices to the computers using USB ports is not recommended.
- Inappropriate use of the Internet may result in being excluded from using the Internet at the library. Additional consequences may be imposed.
CROWN POINT COMMUNITY LIBRARY WIRELESS POLCIY
The Crown Point Community Library is pleased to provide wireless Internet access at the Crown Point Library location. Anyone with their own equipment that is compatible with the 802.11b or 802.11g wireless standard will be able to use it. Users are responsible for their own antivirus, security, and privacy.Wireless access is inherently insecure. The library cannot assume responsibility for the safety of equipment or other wireless device configurations, security, or data resulting from connection to the library's wireless access.
Technical support cannot be provided for personal equipment. Printing from wireless devices is not available at this time.
Wireless users are subject to all conditions of the Crown Point Community Library's Acceptable Use and Internet Safety Policy.

Some reference books to help you choose, available for use in the library:
- Genreflecting: A Guide to Reading Interests in Genre Fiction, that describes books in different genres, such as crime, westerns, adventure, romance, science fiction, fantasy, and horror. The indexes allow you to find books by the name of a series character and by subject.
- What Do I Read Next? A Reader's Guide to Current Genre Fiction.This book offers several helpful features for readers. It is divided into sections on mystery, romance, western, fantasy, horror and science fiction. Within each section there are lists of award winners, then an alphabetical list by author of recently published books, each entry giving story type, major characters, time periods, locales, what the book is about, where it's reviewed, and other books you might like. Indexes allow you to search for books by series, time period, geographic area, genre, character name, character description, author, and title.
- To Be Continued: An Annotated Guide to Sequels. Arrangement in this work is by author. Each author has information on all series by him/her, with title, publisher, and date of each book in the series. A brief description of the series is followed by words describing the genre and the subjects. Helpful indexes include title, genre, subjects and literary forms, and time and place.
- Fiction Catalog.Fiction catalog covers all fiction and is arranged by author. Each entry includes bibliographic information about the book, a descriptive summary, excerpts from reviews, and notes on sequels. There is an extensive title and subject index. Some examples of subjects include family chronicles, mafia, neighbors, England--17th century.

- You may search by subject for such genres as detective and mystery stories or ghost stories, the name of characters (type in last name first and they will be identified by Fictitious Character), and locations and/or time periods, such as World War, 1939-1945--Fiction. If you don't find what you want this way, please ask for assistance.

FRIENDS OF THE CROWN POINT COMMUNITY LIBRARY
The Friends of the Crown Point Community Library is an organization that has generously supported the library since 1980 and provides funds for items not covered by the library's budget.
The Friends also:
- Sponsor the Salisbury Series of special cultural events for the community.
- Sponsor bus trips to Chicago and other locations.
Watch for future bus trips.
- Volunteer and help the library staff with projects and events.
- Sponsor the ongoing annual book sale.
- Receive the monthly newsletter "Check It Out" in the mail.
- Are the library's best advocates and ambassadors to the community.
Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month except June, July, and August at 10:00 a.m. in the library.
