FROM THE PODIUM
JOE MALIK, DIRECTOR OF BANDS

Hard to believe its only been one month since my tenure began.  We have accomplished many things:
· The Symphonic Band is already playing through more scales and rhythms than they ever have.
· The Centralettes have already had a successful dance camp.
· The Marching Band has already completed 3 football games and 2 competitions.  (Making finals and placing 4th at Lake Park, and 3rd at the Northern Illinois University Championship Preview.
......and for the first time the Grimmer, Kahler and Lake Central Bands combined for the Homecoming parade for the first Lake Central Corporation Grand  Band with over 800  participants, including flags, poms a majorettes from all three schools.  The
Grand Band took 25 buses to transport them and was the approximate length of three football fields.  It was a "GRAND" sight.
Special thanks to Rocky Killian, Ron Martinson, Bill Moore, Diane Gunty, Leta Lopez, Tim Murphy,  Marcia Bielat, Scott Dallas, Kevin Mathis and Carolyn Saker for all the help making "THE GRAND BAND" a success.

  From Joe Malik to all:

"Thank You for all of the Birthday Wishes"

FROM THE DESK OF MR. DALLAS
PERCUSSION DIRECTOR

Hey All,
I wanted to let every percussion parent, corporation wide, know (if you haven’t been told by your son or daughter) we will be participating in a day of percussion at Franklin Central High School on November 22nd.
I have sent an information sheet home with your child which needed to be turned in with a $10.00 clinic fee by 9/19/97.  Obviously this date has already passed.  If your son or daughter is interested in participating in this event there is still time.  Please bring the $10.00 clinic fee to your school’s music secretary.  Keep in mind this event is for all Lake Central School Corporation percussionists.  I will get a more detailed itinerary out to all parents as the event gets closer.  I hope everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about percussion.  If there are any questions please feel free to call me at 365-8551 ext. 295.

   Thanks,
   Mr. Dallas

FROM THE DESK OF KEVIN MATHIS
CENTRALETTES DIRECTOR

"And from St. John, Indiana----The Tribe of Pride".  It’s an eerie feeling when your hear this announcement and you’re in the band from St. John and you haven’t quite made it to the stadium yet.
As you may have already learned, the Centralettes  made a grand entrance at the Lake Park Joust.  Fortunately, the Centralettes responded with maturity and performed very well in both the prelims and finals competition that day.  They have been improving with each performance this year.
I’m very proud of their growth and I’m confident they will continue our tradition of being one of the best color guards in Indiana.  Like the band, we’re working to complete the fourth movement.  Next week we will begin working on the 2nd tune.
The Centralettes and I would like to thank Bonnie and the other sewers for making the flags we used at the Joust.  They turned out wonderful and made a difference in our performance.   Hopefully, we can add the costumes, remaining equipment and flags by the District Championship.
   Kevin Mathis
   Centralettes Director

GRIMMER BAND NEWS

Grimmer Band enjoyed marching in the annual Valparaiso Popcorn Festival Parade on Saturday, September 6th.  It was also fun practicing and getting together with the Lake Central High School Band and the Kahler Middle School Band for the Homecoming Parade.  Thanks to the High School Boosters for making arrangements for pizza and pop before the parade and for serving it in such an organized manner!
The Band is looking forward to marching, as it has done in years past, in the annual Columbus Day Parade in Chicago on Monday, October 13th.  As soon as the fall marching season is over, work will begin on Holiday Concert music.

   Mr. Martinson

   Mrs. Lopez

CONGRATULATIONS  to The Tribe of Pride on their first two competitions.  On September 20th the Band traveled to Roselle, IL where they placed 4th out of 24 Bands in the "Lake Park Joust Invitational".  On the 27th, they traveled to Northern Illinois University, where they competed in the "Preview of Champions", and placed 3rd.  WAY TO GO!!!

THANKS to all the parents and friends who came out to support the band in the stands and for those who helped chaperone, with the pit and setup.  It was great to see so many faces out there.

The combined bands for the Homecoming Parade went off extremely well.  It was fun watching the parade and was a great experience for all involved.  Thanks to all the parents who helped in any way.

Next week we begin ISSMA contests by traveling to Penn H.S. in Mishawauka, IN for the District Contest.  The following weekend we will be traveling to Center Grove for the Cavalcade of Champions for an afternoon competition, then on to Carmel for an evening competition at the Carmel Invitational.  The Regionals are the following week at Elkhart, IN where we hope to score high enough to make the State Finals on the 25th at the RCA Dome in Indy.

We could use more Booster support in the stands at District, come join us and see some great talent and wonderful shows.
Need a ride to the next competition?  We usually have room for 15 to 20 more adults on the fan/pit bus.  Look at the great benefits:
· No cost
· No driving
· Scenic "fall" tours
· Adult companions
