Welcome to Mr. Joe Malik and family. We look forward to a very successful season and know that your will do an outstanding job as our new band director.
For those who have had the opportunity to meet Mr. Malik, have already grown to like him as he is very easy to get along with. For those of you who have not met him, stop by after any practice and introduce yourself and say hello. The Boosters look forward to his input and working with him to make this a successful season for all.
As you will see in this months letter, we are adding colums by the directors of Kahler and Grimmer Middle Schools, and are adding them to our mailing list. If there is anyone who is an alumni of the "Tribe of Pride" who would like to receive a copy of this newsletter, please send in their name and address to Judy Schweikert and I will make sure they get on the mailing list. We want to reach as many people as possible and want them to come out and support the "Tribe" as well as the middle school bands.
FROM THE PODIUM:
Welcome Back or for you freshmen Welcome Aboard.
This will be another successful year for the
L.C. Bands. The Marching Band has already been hard ar work
preparing for their competition season. They will also compete at
this year's Fiest Bowl, so be watching around New Year's to see your favorite
band on National Television.
The Centralettes & Poms will be looking to repeat last years State Champion season, and I am looking forward to working with the concert bands and jazz band.
Parents, please feel free to introduce yourself.....One
of the best places is at the Band Booster Meetings (you will be getting
calls to remind you). If not at the meeting, after rehearsal is best.
If there is a concern, an appointment should be made so that your
problem can receive full attention. Please call for your appointment.
If you need more info, try our Band Hotline
or leave a message.
Looking forward to a Great Year.
Joe Malik
Director of Bands

Look for your I.D. cards in the mail. You must have an I.D. card and turn it in when you make your grocery purchases. Both stores now have new rules and regulations for the shop & share fundraising program.
The concession stand is in dire need of volunteers to work football games. These games include freshman, junior varsity, varsity and Grimmer games. PLEASE help out as many times as you can, as there are people who will have to be there for every game, and will work short handed, if they don't get more help. We had a wonderful response and turnout for the first varsity game, and would like to see the same kind of response for the rest of the season. This is a very small commitment from you to help your students. Call Sandy Pyle at 322-8941.
We need a chairperson to head the Auction fundraiser. We really need to geth this committee mobilized so that we can set the date for the Auction, and start collecting donations. Please call Shirley Niebling at 864-0458 or Joanne Nordin at 322-8941.
If there is anyone who attends all the local craft shows, we would appreciate hearing from you. We are in need of a person to attend as many shows as possible to pass out our flyers, advertising our show in November. If you can help with this small task, call Shirley or Joanne at the numbers above.
The sewing committee is in need of sewing machines in good working order, or needing minor repairs. If you have one that you are not using and would like to donate it to the band, it would be greatly appreciated, and you can get a tax write off too. Please contact any of the Booster officers.
WHAT IS THE PIT CREW? Those of us that have been around don't thing twice about this question, but for our freshman parents and newcomers to the band, this is a common question. The Pit Crew consists of any and all the parents we can get to help with the loading and unloading of the semi trailer and setting up and taking down of the field shows.
Many of you were asked to help unload the trailer when it returned before the buses from band camp. This is something that needs to be done for every trip, show and competition. It is a great help, when we can get as many parent as possible to help, as the trailers must be unloaded and everything moved to the band room before the students can be released.
We have many sets that usually have to be constructed as well as loaded and unloaded at the schools we perform at. the podiums have to be put together and taken apart for each performance. Sets, percussion instruments etc. need to be moved on and off the fields where the band performs. We usually need anywhere from 30 to 50 people to help get our kids ready and onto the field.
We are always in need of help and would love to have anyone who wants to the "Tribe" have a very successful year, just stop by and help out. There is always room for any extra pair of hands. Many parents were on the field for every show last year and were never able to see the show from the stands. I'm sure if we had enough people available, all of our parents can see their student perform from the stands at least once or twice.
While I'm on the subject of the show the students perform, I want to take this time to invite all of you parents and friends to attend our performances.
Having the stands full of cheering parents and LC backers does wonders for the students morale. As a parent who helped on the "pit crew" the last 2 years, its a great feeling to hear the crowds (and ours have been small) cheer these kids on as they enter the field and put on a fantastic performance. If you have never been to a competition, you don't know what you are missing. It's such a great feeling to watch your student or friend march out on the field; and when you hear them pay, watch their precision movements, or the exciting dance moves of the Centralettes, it brings tears to your eyes and makes you proud to be a "Tribe of Pride" parent. You experience feelings that keep you coming back for more. So, don't be a "stay at home" parent who never knows what their student or the band is doing. Come out and be part of the "Tribe of Pride".
We try to have a "block" where all LC fans sit together and all have a really great time. Many cars caravan down to the downstate trips, with signs in their windows and "Tribe" flags flying.
The schedule is in every newsletter, and if you don't want to drive, there is a fan bus available to ride. Further details can be obtained from any officer, or from the itinery that the students get during the week prior to a show with maps and directions to each location.
ABOUT THE FRESHMAN PARENTS.........The response from this year's incoming parents is better than ever. THANKS for stepping forward and offering your help.
If you take any pictures this year and would like to contribute them to this years slide show (we will return them to you), please give them to any of the officers. Any photo that brings out the essence of the season or year will be considered.

Each month I will try to print some of the information we have.
Ten of nations's top-ranked high school marching bands are invited to compete for the coveted Grand Master's Trophy in the prestigious BLUE CROSS & BLUE SHIELD OF ARIZONA FIESTA BOWL NATIONAL BAND CHAMPIONSHIP. Each band will perform its best 10 minute field program for judges and 10,000 enthusiastic spectators at this pageantry in its 20th year.
The field contest takes place at ASU Sun Devil Stadium, home of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Football Classic, the NFL's Arizona Cardinals and the Arizona State Sun Devil football team. The field championship is held in conjunction with the MICRO AGE FIESTA BOWL PARADE, the only major bowl parade where bands are judged. Held in downtown Phoenix, the 1997 parade will feature 17 competing bands from 12 states and is broadcast nationally. (Check local tv listings for times. Some stations broadcast on New Year's Eve, others delay coverage until New Year's Day.)
FROM THE DESK OF MR. DALLAS:
Hey, I hope everybody had a wonderful summer and is ready to dive into yet another busy school year. There are a ;pt pf [;ams om tje wprls fpr tje [ercussionists this year. We are planning on participating in the newly established Indiana Percussion Association which will begin shortly after our return from Phoenix. I am still deciding whether we will compete in the indoor marching section or the concert percussion section.
This promises to be a very challenging year for all the percussion students as we will also be hosting our own percussion festival in April. Please look for upcoming announcements as I'm sure we will need all the help we can get to make this first annual event a success. I'm looking forward to this year and all the events that are planned and I hope to see you all at our performances.
Mr. Dallas
FROM THE DESK OF KEVIN MATHIS - CENTRALETTES DIRECTOR
Can we talk! Each month I'm requested
to put together an article for the newsletter. This month is number
three. I customarily try to inform you of the current status of Centralettes
and what you can expect from us in the future. I'm running a little
low on warm "fuzzy" material so, today I looked up the word competition
in The American Heritage Dictionary. It read as follows: Competition
1. The act of competing. As you might have guessed, I looked
up competing and it read: Competing 1. To strive or contend
with another. (Lat. Competere, to strive together.) Something
to think about as we strive to prepare for September 20th.
Kevin
