Our lady of Guadalupe appeared in Mexico as the pregnant Mother of God to Blessed Juan Diego, an Aztex Indian, on December 9,10 and 12, 1531. She left a Miraculous Image of her appearance on his cactus fiber cloak, or "tilma", which still exists today for all to see in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
Our Lady come to offer faith, hope, and consolation to the oppressed natives of Mexico and to reconcile them with their Spanish rulers. She put an end to the bloody human sacrifice of the Aztecs and converted ten million natives in the next 10 years!
The Aztecs practiced human sacrifice as an offering to their false gods. In his justice, God sent Hernando Cortes and the Spanish to conquer and evangelize Mexico in 1519. In His mercy, He sent His mother to conquer human sacrifice, melt hearts and bring peace in 1531.
After the conquest, the Spanish rule of the natives was so severe that a bloody revolt was imminent. Bishop Zumarraga prayed for Our Lady to intervene to prevent an uprising, to reconcile the Spanish and the natives and to bring peace. He asked that he would receive roses native to his homeland of Castile, Spain as a sigh that his prayer would be answered.
On December 9, 1531, which was then the feast day of the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady appeared to Blessed Juan Diego who was a recently converted Aztec. She asked him to go to the Bishop and request him to build a chirch for her on the barren hill of Tepeyac which is now part of Mexico City. Our Lady wanted to show her merciful love to all of her children. The prudent Bishop asked Juan to ask the Lady for a sign. Juan did so and Our Lady promised to give him the sign.
On December 12, Our Lady again appeared to Juan on Tepeyac Hill and told him to pick the Castilian roses, which miraculously appeared there and to bring them to the Bishop as the sign for him to believe her request. Juan gathered the roses into his tilma and brought them to the Bishop.
He opened the tilma to show them and, to everyone's astonishment, the Image of Our Lady appeared on it. The Bishop then built the church as Our Lady had requested and ten million natives were converted and baptized to the one, true faith within the next 10 years. Human sacrifice ended in Mexico forever. Our Lady of Guadalupe, which means River of Light and Crusher of the serpent's head, brought the light of the true faith, crushed the false gods of Mexico and established an era of peace.
It has been scientifically established that the Miraculous Image is not a painting. There is no undersizing or pigment in the tilma. It should have rotted after twenty years but it has not decayed after 460 years. In 1921 the tilma survived unscathed from a bomb blast set off directly underneath it by Mexican anti-Catholics.
A photographer enlarged a photograph of the eyes of the Image and found the faces of Juan Diego and Bishop Zumarraga miraculously reflected in the eyes of Our Lady! The distortion and place of the optical reflection in the eyes of Our Lady were identical with what is produced in a human eye. Five eye doctors who examined Our Lady's eye said that they looked into a human eye.
Pope John Paul II said, "I feel drawn to this picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe because her face is full of kindness and simplicity . . . it calls me."
Pope Pius XII said that the Miraculous Image was left by "brushes which were not of this earth" and "we are certain that as long as Our Lady of Guadalupe is recognized as their Queen and Mother, America and Mexico are safe."
A great Our Lady of Guadalupe site. Lots of info about her!
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Ever Virgin, Mother of the True God, Woman Clothed With the Sun, I totally consecrate myself to you and to your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart.
In humility, through this consecration, I receive you, Virgin of Guadalupe, into every moment of my life and every fiber of my being. I am assured that God has chosen you for me and recall what the Angel of the Lord told St. Joseph: "Do not be afraid to take Mary to yourself because what is in her is of the Holy Spirit." See Mt 1:20.
Holy Archangel Gabriel who presented to us the beauty and virtues of Mary's soul, (see Lk 1:26-35) obtain for me the grace to imitate these virtues and, by my example, to show others how to live, how to love, how to sacrifice and how to die.
As I receive you, Queen and Mother of All Nations, I desire, with your help, to grow in my relationship with you, a relationship which was established by your Divine Son as He hung dying on the cross when He said to you His Holy and Sorrowful Mother, "Mother, behold your Son!" and to St. John, the beloved disciple, "Son, behold your Mother!" See Jn 19:26-27.
I consecrate to you, Protectress of the Unborn, my work of protecting the sacredness of all human life from conception to natural death; my work in spreading the Good News; and my work in renewing and protecting the sanctity of the family. I ask for the special protection of the Infant Jesus, of you His Mother and of St. Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
I implore you, Queen of the Angels, to send St. Michael and the other angels to defend us in our battle against Satan and all of the evil spirits in this present darkness arrayed against God and the human life He creates. See Eph 6:12.
In reparation I will pray and sacrifice. Please pray for us who seek refuge in you, for the conversion of poor sinners who offend you and for the salvation of all souls.
I promise to keep ever before me you instructions at the Wedding feast at Cana, "Do whatever He tells you". See Jn 2:5. In doing so, I will be loyal and obedient to the Pope, your first son on earth. I am sure in my consecration to you that you will lead me on a safe and sure path the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Holy Mother of God, save us through the Flame of Love of your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart! Send forth the grace from your Flame of Love to the whole human race now and at the hour of our death. Send forth your Spouse, the Holy Spirit, to bring us the New Pentecost and the fire of His Divine Love to renew the face of the earth.
Let there be revealed, once more, in the history of the worl the infinite power of merciful love. May it put and end to evil. May it transform consciences. May your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart reveal for all the light of hope. May Christ the King reign over us, our families, cities, states, nations and the whole of humanity.
O clement, O loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary, hear our pleas and accept this cry from our hearts!
Dear Lady of Guadalupe, I conclude my consecration to you with the message you gave to Blessed Juan Diego in Mexico on Tepeyac Hill in 1531 hereby accepting it also as a message from you to me.
Know for certain that I am the perfect and perpetual Virgin Mary, Mother of the True God. . . . Here I will show and offer my love, my compassion, my help and my protection to the people. I am your merciful Mother, the Mother of all those who love me, of those who cry to me, of those who have confidence in me. Here I will hear their weeping and their sorrows and will remedy and alleviate their suffering, necessities and misfortunes. . . . Listen and let it penetrate into your heart. . . . Do not be troubled or weighed down with greif. So not fear any illness or vexation, anxiety or pain. Am I not here who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not your fountain of life? Are you not in the folds of my mantle? In the crossing of my arms? Is there anything else that you need?
